Week 2 of the IHSAA football season is in the books.
Carmel impressed thoroughly in its top-10 Hamilton County showdown against Westfield, while Class 6A No. 1 Brownsburg looked every bit the best team in the state with a 29-0 win over Cathedral.

Carmel 34, Westfield 10 (read more)
It is only two games, but the question, ‘Is Carmel back?’ seems to be trending a positive direction for the Greyhounds.
In Kevin Wright’s second game of his second tenure as Carmel coach, the Class 6A seventh-ranked Greyhounds rolled to a 34-10 win over No. 2 Westfield. Here is how it happened:
Turning point: No doubt about this one. Greyson George’s interception the end zone early in the fourth quarter was a major momentum turner. Westfield, after trailing 20-0 going into halftime, cut Carmel’s lead to 20-10 and had the ball at the Carmel 17 with a chance to cut the deficit to one score. Westfield quarterback Aiden Grabowski dropped back and appeared to have a receiver open in the end zone. But George saw the play developing, left his man, and picked off the pass. Carmel scored on its next drive and never looked back.
Player of the game: Dane Batburst set up shot in the Westfield backfield all night. The Duke recruit and senior defensive end and his teammates made life miserable for the Shamrocks’ offense. Westfield finished with just 68 yards rushing and 130 passing yards, though 51 of those yards came on one play.
Play of the game: There are a few choices, but I will go with Anthony Coellner’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Bellin with 9.3 seconds left in the first quarter. It came after a nice pump fake from Coellner, who led Bellin perfectly in the end zone for a 10-0 Carmel lead. It also followed a play earlier in the drive when Westfield appeared to recover a fumble but the Carmel was ruled down prior to the ball coming loose. — Kyle Neddenriep
Brownsburg 29, Cathedral 0 (read more)
The Class 6A top-ranked host Bulldogs shined in all three phases — offense, defense and special teams — Friday against 5A No. 2 Cathedral, with the defending state champions rolling to a 29-0 win.
Senior quarterback Oscar Frey threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns for Brownsburg (2-0). The defending state champion Bulldogs host Franklin Central next week. They are 8-0 all-time against the Flashes.
Here are three impressions from Friday’s game:
Turning Point: Brownsburg’s defense forced Cathedral to a three-and-out on the Irish’s opening possession, and the Bulldogs’ offense needed just 48 seconds to score its first touchdown. So, if there was a turning point in this one, that was it. However, field position was one of the biggest factors early.
Brownsburg averaged a starting position of its own 45-yard line on its first four possessions, compared to Cathedral starting each of its first four drives on the 20 thanks to touchback kickoffs by senior Will Orlando. The Bulldogs scored on three of their first four possessions, while Cathedral punted on each of theirs.
Play of the Game: Junior receiver Branden Sharpe scored Brownsburg’s first touchdown, taking a short pass from Frye and turning it into a 46-yard reception by outracing Irish defenders. But that wasn’t Sharpe’s best play. His second reception went for 55-yards with Sharpe juking multiple defenders before finally being taken down at the 2. That wasn’t his best play either. That came when Sharpe took the opening play of the third quarter 80 yards, catching a short slant from Frye and outrunning everyone for his second touchdown of the game and fourth on the season.
Top Performer: Fresh off a seven-catch, 159-yard, two-touchdown game in the Bulldogs’ season-opening win over Archbishop Spalding (Md.), the 5-11, 165-pound Sharpe was unstoppable against Cathedral. He had six catches for 146 yards and a touchdown—in the first half alone. Sharpe, who has offers from Indiana and Purdue, finished with eight catches for 237 yards and a pair of scores. — Paul Shepherd

Franklin Central 22, Roncalli 15 (read more)
Franklin Central quarterback Connor Moreland led his team 80 yards in the final minutes of Friday’s game against Roncalli, throwing the go-ahead score to Hudson Moritz with 2:55 left, sending the Flashes to a 22-15 victory.
Play of the game: Franklin Central has impressive athletes on the outside and one false step is all they need to get open down the field. On first-and-10 from the Roncalli 47, Franklin Central quarterback Connor Moreland faked a hand off to his running back, freezing the defense and allowing receiver Markell Bailey to get a free release. Moreland dropped a well-placed ball to Bailey on a go route, leading to a 53-yard touchdown.
Turning Point: Roncalli trailed for a majority of the game, but the Royals did not go down without a fight. Gavin Louthain’s 34-yard field goal cut Franklin Central’s lead to six with 10:55 left in the fourth. The Royals forced a Franklin four and out, and Collin Ash broke free for a 75-yard touchdown, tying the game at 22. A missed extra point kept the game tied. Roncalli had a chance to take control of the game, but Moreland answered, going a perfect 5-for-5 on the ensuing possession, capping the 13-play drive with the winning touchdown pass to Moritz.
Player of the Game: Franklin Central quarterback Connor Moreland. Moreland showed great touch on two deep passes to Markell Bailey, and when Roncalli tried to take away his top threat, More spread the ball around with accuracy. Moreland finished 14-for-20 for 202 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. — Akeem Glaspie
