Honor Flight's 20th trip to D.C. and welcome home set for Saturday

EVANSVILLE — Honor Flight of Southern Indiana veterans will fly to and from Washington, D.C. on Saturday, the day ending with a welcome home parade at Evansville Regional Airport.

It will be Honor Flight’s 20th trip to the nation’s capital. The festivities actually will begin Thursday with a EVV20 Honor Flight Meet & Greet dinner from 4 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at C.K. Newsome Center at 100 E. Walnut St. in Evansville. That event is closed and not open to the public.

Eighty-six veterans will depart Evansville Regional Airport at 6:15 a.m. CST on Saturday to visit memorials for the wars in which they served. It too will not be a public event.

The veterans will return at about 7:45 p.m. Saturday, and that will be a public event. A welcome home celebration will be held at the airport at 8:15 p.m. No personal chairs or coolers will be allowed in the airport.

“Bring your American flags, signs, banners, and as many people as you can!” states a flier created by Honor Flight. “ARRIVE EARLY TO GET A GOOD SPOT!!!”

Parking for the event will be available at nearby Anchor Industries, with directional signs provided by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). Buses will transport guests from Anchor beginning at 6:30 p.m. Parking in the airport lot itself will be reserved for veterans, guardians, airport customers and those with parking permits.

“Most of these Heroes never received a homecoming,” states the Honor Flight flier. “YOU get to change that!”
