EVANSVILLE — All of the Evansville-area Republican members of the Indiana House voted in favor of mid-decade redistricting.
Rep. Wendy McNamara, R-Evansville; Rep. Tim O’Brien, R-Evansville; Rep. Cindy Ledbetter, R-Newburgh; and Rep. Matt Hostettler, R-Fort Branch all voted yes to House Bill 1032 on Friday.
All five legislators have ignored multiple requests from the Courier & Press to state their position on redistricting prior to a vote.
Rep. Alex Burton, D-Evansville, was the only local legislator to vote against the measure. Burton has been vocal about his issues with redistricting and the need for Indiana to focus on issues like housing and energy costs.
The map proposal now goes to the Indiana Senate. Evansville’s two senators are split on the issue.
Sen. Vaneta Becker is a no vote, according to a post she shared via social media. But Sen. Jim Tomes, an on-the-record no with other news outlets, has recently changed his mind on the issue.
On Nov. 18, Tomes released a statement that he would vote yes if redistricting came to a vote.
“On the question of redistricting, I’ve already given my opinion about the proposal,” Tomes stated. “However, I want to be clear that I had always stated to the governor and to our caucus that if the issue ever came down to a vote, that vote would then be whether to support our Commander in Chief Donald Trump, or the other party. I would have voted ‘yes’ for our president.”
