DUNKIRK, IN — A former Dunkirk police officer has pleaded guilty to a rape charge.

Conner W. Esmond, 29, of Bluffton, was charged last May with sexually assaulting a Fort Wayne woman he had met through a dating app. According to court documents, the assault took place in the victim’s home in June 2023.

In recent days, Esmond pleaded guilty to the rape charge, a Level 3 felony carrying up to 16 years in prison, in Allen Superior Court 6 in Fort Wayne.

A plea agreement calls for a nine-year sentence with six years suspended.

Judge David Zen took the deal under advisement and tentatively set sentencing for March 9.

Esmond, previously of Dunkirk, was a police officer in Bluffton before joining the Dunkirk Police Department in 2022.
