The Marion County Coroner’s Office has identified the two runners who died during the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon after suffering medical emergencies.
The coroner identified the men as Kyle Fisher, 40, and John Clifford Mace, 71.
Both men started suffering their medical emergencies near the marathon’s finish line at West Washington Street and North West Street, according to the coroner’s office.
Fisher was pronounced dead at Methodist Hospital, and Mace was pronounced dead at Eskenazi Hospital.
It is unclear what caused the men’s medical emergency. The coroner’s office is expected to perform an autopsy on the men on Nov. 10.
Beyond Monumental response
A day after the race, marathon organizers released a statement confirming that two people had died from unrelated medical emergencies.
Organizers noted that its on-site medical team and local first responders provided care to the men before they were transported to local hospitals.
“Participant safety is our top priority, and we are profoundly grateful to the medical professionals and emergency personnel who responded with such care and professionalism,” the statement read.
