Kay Adams and the ‘Up and Adams’ Show were at Indianapolis Colts’ training camp on Sunday. Joining Adams for an interview was wide receiver Michael Pittman.
As expected, part of the conversation was around the Colts’ quarterback competition, specifically what Pittman has seen from Anthony Richardson this summer.
“I think that the way that he’s been able to block out all of that outside noise because he’s been getting a lot of shots fired at him last year to now and him being able to block that out and show up every single day,” Pittman told Adams.
“I would just say his preparation, it wasn’t bad or not good before, but it’s gotten even to a higher level. He’s doing everything he can to put himself in the best position possible.”
Part of that preparation is that you’ll often see Richardson on the practice field with his call sheet, getting mental reps in prior to everything beginning.
Consistency is ultimately what Shane Steichen is looking for at the quarterback position, but that isn’t only referring to each player’s completion rate. It’s also about how they operate the offense down in and down out, along with their day-to-day preparation.
On the field, Richardson has been much more efficient this summer. A priority for him during the offseason was on those short-to-intermediate throws, with Richardson emphasizing his footwork, which is where proper mechanics and accuracy often begins for a quarterback.
Pittman has seen the results of that work.
“I feel like he’s hitting those throws that he worked so hard to master this offseason. You see him making a lot of those touch throws where he’s dropping it in over those backers, and over those DBs and he’s doing it consistently.”
