Colts training camp preview: One player to watch at QB position

With training camp for the Indianapolis Colts getting closer, which players should be on our radars as these practices and preseason games unfold?

As part of our training camp preview, we’ll be highlighting one player from each position group to keep your eyes on. In some instances, it may be one of the Colts’ top players that we’ll be watching closely or it could be a player fighting for playing time or a roster spot.

Up first are the quarterbacks.

Right off the bat, I’m going to break my own rule by choosing two players instead of just one.

Jones said recently that he is “cleared to do everything,” although we will wait and see if that means he is a full go from the jump. But regardless, when on the field, all eyes will be on Jones and how he performs.

In re-signing Jones this offseason, the belief internally is that he can recapture last season’s form. Through 10 games, Jones was among the most productive quarterbacks in football, while the Colts’ offense was red-hot.

That said, even before Jones’ injury, defenses were beginning to slow him and the offense down. Was that a sign of things to come? With Jones’ season ending early, we never got the opportunity to see how he and Shane Steichen would counter.

Jones will determine the ceiling for this Colts’ offense, and with a difficult schedule to start the season, Indianapolis needs him to hit the ground running.

With Richardson, he is competing for the backup role, while his trade request is presumably still on the table. If Richardson performs well, that could help faciliate a trade.

The Athletic’s James Boyd noted recently that Richardson is due a $4.2 million roster bonus early in training camp. If Richardson remains on the team up to that point and the Colts pay that bonus, any team could then acquire Richardson and only owe him $1.1 million for the 2026 season.

This could also make acquiring him more appealing, helping to push a deal across the finish line.
