Training camp for the Indianapolis Colts kicks off in about a month, so as part of our preview of what’s to come, we will be evaluating each positional battle that is expected to unfold.
What took place during offseason programs laid the foundation for each of these competitions and provided us with some insights into where things may stand. That said, how training camp and the preseason unfold will ultimately determine who wins these roles.
Next up is the running back position.
What Colts’ training camp battle is taking place at running back?
DJ Giddens and Seth McGowan are competing for the backup role behind Jonathan Taylor. Second-year back Ulysses Bentley is also on the roster.
Where do things stand following offseason programs?
Until the pads come on, it can be difficult to evaluate the running back position specifically. But as a collective duo, both Giddens and McGowan offered encouraging signs during offseason programs.
“This offseason, Giddens looks much more comfortable and decisive, and rookie seventh-round pick Seth McGowan is running with 100% effort,” Jake Arthur of Roundtable Sports wrote. “No one can compare with Taylor, but if either Giddens or McGowan proves capable in pass protection and/or on special teams, the Colts might already have a real backup on the roster.”
Giddens has experience on his side with a year under his belt, and Shane Steichen has seen growth from him. McGowan has caught the attention of Taylor in the early going and brings a physical presence to the position as well.
Predicting who wins the training camp competition
For now, I’ll predict that Giddens ends up as RB2 on the depth chart. The primary reason behind that selection is the experience he has operating in Steichen’s offense. What could end up differentiating these backs in this battle is their ability to hold up in pass protection and contribute to the passing game, as well as special teams.
That said, we should continue to expect Taylor to shoulder the workload at this position.
