Colts' QB Anthony Richardson evaluates his play in training camp

Following the Indianapolis Colts’ joint practice against the Green Bay Packers, how would third-year quarterback Anthony Richardson evaluate his overall play this summer?

“I would like to agree, I would like to say I’ve improved from my first two camps. But there’s still a lot of room for improvement,” Richardson said, via Colts.com. “I feel like I’m nowhere near where I want to be. Yeah, I’ve been better throughout this camp but there’s still things I need to work on, still things I need to clean up and I still got to be a better quarterback for this team. So, yes I’ve improved, but there’s still work to be done.”

Without question, Richardson has made real strides this summer. His offseason focus was on his footwork so that he could become more accurate on the short to intermediate throws–which he has been.

Richardson’s decision-making has improved as well, while Michael Pittman recently mentioned that Richardson has gotten much better at making those touch passes.

However, like Richardson said, there is still room for continued growth. As ESPN’s Stephen Holder put it in a recent article of his, Richardson has still been “somewhat boom-or-bust” — able to generate the big plays but still missing some easy throws he has to make.

What’s been promising is that when Richardson has had a down day–which is going to happen in the NFL–he’s been able to bounce back.

Shane Steichen still doesn’t have a specific timeline on when he will name the Colts’ starting quarterback, but this week’s preseason game, where Richardson will see the bulk of the playing time in the first half, figures to be an important factor in that decision-making process.

“We’ll work through that,” Steichen said via Colts.com. “We had today, we got a preseason game (Saturday), we have some practices next week and we’ll work through that. I don’t have an exact timetable on it, but sooner rather than later would be nice.”
