It’s mid August — when school is beginning, the weather is still hot and fall is fast approaching. In Bloomington that means there are more people and lots of options for weekend fun. Here’s a smattering of what’s happening — from comedians at Comedy Attic, Junk in the Trunk at Switchyard Park, line dancing at Banneker Community Center and the beginning of IU Cinema’s fall offerings.
Laurie Kilmartin returns for laughs at the Comedy Attic
Comedian Laurie Kilmartin is back at the Comedy Attic Friday, Aug. 14, and Saturday, Aug. 15, for four shows — at 7 and 9:15 both nights. Kilmartin is the 2026 Peabody Award-winning writer for “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” She has a long list of awards for work with “Conan” and other shows. Tickets are $27.89 for adults and $22.89 for students. Swap some seeds at the library
Monroe County residents can swap seeds and help the gardens around the county grow. The downtown branch of the Monroe County Public Library and Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard will have free seeds available. Leftover seeds will be donated to the participating seed libraries so that they’re still available for the community. You don’t need to bring seeds to take seeds. Anyone donating seeds must make sure their seeds are not from invasive plants and note the type and variety of seed, the year the seeds are from and whether the seeds are store-bought or self-saved. Junk in the Trunk happens Saturday
Junk in the Trunk combines recycling and treasure hunting at the same time. You can participate 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at Switchyard Park Pavilion at 1601 S. Rogers St. There will be vendors inside and outside the pavilion selling furniture, books, clothing, toys, household goods and more.
Tomato tasting at Saturday’s farmers’ market
Taste a variety of home-grown tomatoes — heirloom species that are yellow, orange, purple, red and green — from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market at the Showers Complex, 401 N. Morton St. There’s no cost for tasting and there’s plenty of tomatoes and other produce you can purchase from local farmers, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Put on your boots, denim, pearls and do some line dancing
Grab your boots, denim and pearls for some dancing. 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, join in the the line dancing event Denim & PearlZ at the Banneker Community Center, 930 W. Seventh St. Admission is $15. It’s hosted by Upsilon Kappa Zeta – Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and is open to both seasoned line dancers and people trying it for the first time. Enjoy music, fun and fellowship. A dance towel and light snacks will be offered to participants.
‘Legally Blonde’ starts the IU Cinema fall season Aug. 18
Tuesday, Aug. 18, is the beginning of the fall semester’s films and events at Indiana University Cinema with a 4K restoration of “Legally Blonde.” The 2001 romantic comedy, starring Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Davis and directed by Robert Luketic, begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $6 for the 25th anniversary screening.
And get ready for IU Cinema’s annual open house on Thursday, Aug. 20, for an afternoon of movies, games and more. It all starts at 3:30 p.m. as a way for people to check out the facilities at 1213 E. Seventh St. on the IU Bloomington campus.
