CASA director retires after 22 years running program for abused, neglected kids

SOUTH BEND — After 22 years, Brenda Matuszkiewicz is retiring as executive director of the Court Appointed Special Advocates program in St. Joseph County where volunteers assist and represent abused and neglected children as they go through the court system.

Stephanie Shumaker, who has 16 years of experience in the program, has been named the next executive director of CASA, according to a press release. She brings “a brings a wealth of knowledge and dedication,” Madison Gabbard, director of human resources of the Probate Court, said in the release. 

Matuszkiewicz is credited with major growth at CASA, expansion of its staff and enhancement of operations.  

“She led not only with skill and determination, but with heart, always putting the needs of children, volunteers, and staff first,” the release said.
