Beech Grove school bus catalytic converters stolen. Yes, again

Thieves struck Beech Grove CitySchools again, stealing catalytic converters from the district’s bus fleet for the second time this summer.

The second incident comes after Beech Grove School Board trustees approved a “comprehensive upgrade” for security at its transportation facility. In late May, the buses were left inoperable, and the district was forced to borrow buses from nearby districts to close out the school year.

According to a police report, the 21 catalytic converters stolen overnight are valued at about $84,000. The equipment stolen in May was valued at about $100,000.

The equipment was recently replaced after the first theft, the district said. After the May incident district leadership approved the purchase of an upgraded security system for the bus barn. The district had completed a review of options, bidding process and equipment selection, a news release indicated.

“We are currently awaiting installation of the new security system and are working to have it completed as quickly as possible,” the district said.

At the time of the theft, the facility had cameras and floodlights, a spokesperson said.

Beech Grove Schools students will still head back to class as scheduled on July 29. The district said it is developing a transportation plan. It’s unclear if all of the buses were struck again in this theft.

“Some students may temporarily ride buses or vehicles that do not belong to Beech Grove City Schools while repairs are completed,” the district said. “We will communicate any temporary route, schedule, or vehicle changes directly with affected families as soon as plans are finalized.”

Beech Grove Police Department officers are investigating both events.

Beech Grove Schools will provide another update about transportation on July 20.

“We share the frustration and disappointment our community is feeling right now,” the district said.
