Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby will be entering the NFL’s supplemental draft, and one ESPN analyst identified the Indianapolis Colts as a team that could be interested.
But first, how did we get to this point? Here is a quick rundown from ESPN:
“Sorsby admitted to placing bets on a variety of sports and completed in-patient rehab for a gambling addiction. The NCAA denied his request for reinstatement in May, but a Texas judge granted him a temporary injunction in early June, making him eligible for the 2026 college football season. But amid a Big 12 lawsuit against Texas Tech and backlash around his eligibility, Sorsby ultimately opted to head to the NFL.”
Now, what is the supplemental NFL draft?
This is for players who missed the NFL’s draft filing deadline to be a part of the April draft that takes place annually. Oftentimes, these players have lost their college eligibility, wrote ESPN’s Keith Jenkins.
If a team is interested in drafting a player, they bid one of their picks from the following year’s draft. So if a team used a fourth-round pick in the supplemental draft to pick Sorsby, they would be without their fourth-round pick in the 2027 NFL draft.
The supplemental draft does not take place every year. It was last held in 2023, and the last time a player was taken was in 2019.
What to know about Brendan Sorsby
Sorsby spent two seasons at Indiana and the last two years with Cincinnati. He was set to enter the 2026 college football season as one of the top prospects in the game.
Over the last two years, he’s completed nearly 63% of his passes, averaging nearly 8.0 yards per attempt with 44 passing touchdowns to only 12 interceptions.
ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller had this to say about where Sorsby would have ranked in the 2026 NFL draft among quarterbacks. For the 2027 class, Sorsby was QB3 on Miller’s big board.
“In conversations with scouts before the NFL’s mid-January deadline for underclassmen to declare for the 2026 draft, many believed Sorsby would have been a high Round 1 pick. He would not have been drafted ahead of eventual No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza, but in what was seen as a weak class at the position, he would have been ranked ahead of Ty Simpson — the QB2 and eventual No. 13 pick — on most boards.”
Why are the Colts mentioned as a potential team of interest with Brendan Sorsby?
Ben Solak noted that there are eight teams that come to mind that could have interest in Sorsby, and this includes the Colts.
“The Colts might need a plan, as Daniel Jones’ two-year contract has a trapdoor after 2026 should his rehab from an Achilles injury go poorly,” Solak wrote.
I understand the uncertainty around Jones, and even with signing a new deal, it is for only two years. That said, if Jones plays to the level that the Colts believe he can, then having a developmental quarterback waiting in the wings isn’t a need. And if Jones struggles and the Colts miss the playoffs again, I don’t expect GM Chris Ballard to be around next offseason, and a new GM would likely want to bring in his own quarterback.
The point being, given the drastically different outcomes that the 2026 season could have for the Colts, I don’t know that investing a future draft pick into the quarterback position is on the Colts’ radar.
It’s also worth noting that the Colts are already short on draft capital in 2027, not having a first-round pick again.
