ELKHART LAKE, WI – Alex Palou made a rare mistake at the Grand Prix at Road America that could cost him a win.
On Palou’s second pit stop of the day, IndyCar race control deemed he was speeding on pit lane, leading to a drive-through penalty. The penalty left Palou, who was second when he pitted, further back of Felix Rosenqvist in the lead.
On the very next lap, however, Christian Rasmussen’s Ed Carpenter Racing No. 21 Chevrolet came to a halt right at Road America’s start-finish line, ending his day. The stalled car led to a full-course caution, which helped Palou maintain position. Palou was eighth on the Lap 33 restart, having already pitted.
Palou, who has won five straight IndyCar poles, is looking to break the Road America record with his fourth win at the road course. He’s currently tied with Mario Andretti, Michael Andretti and Emerson Fittipaldi for the most IndyCar wins at the course.
