Five people are dead after a South Shore train hit a car Wednesday night, The Tribune’s newsgathering partner WNDU reported.
A witness told police the driver of the car tried to beat the train and drove around the crossing gate in Gary, Indiana.
The number 35 train, the last train to South Bend of the night, was involved, WNDU reported, saying the train was delayed about half an hour by the crash.
