PEORIA — A 17-year-old was shot in the head at Bradley Park and later pronounced dead and two other teens were injured by gunfire in a separate incident during a series of three shootings on Sunday in different parts of the city.
At about 5:37 p.m., officers responded to Stadium Park in the 500 block of East Lake Avenue on a report of shots fired, according to a release from the Peoria Police Department. Officers located two victims, ages 16 and 17, both suffering from gunshot wounds. One victim sustained a gunshot wound to the chest while the other was injured in the upper arm. Both were transported to a hospital for treatment.
During the course of the investigation, it was determined that one of the victims was in possession of a stolen firearm, according to police.
At about 6:33 p.m., officers responded to the 6700 block of North Mountello Drive for a separate report of gunfire. Responding officers located evidence that a vehicle and the front door of a residence had been struck. No injuries were reported.
At approximately 7:16 p.m., officers responded to Bradley Park for another report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers encountered a “chaotic scene with numerous individuals fleeing on foot and in vehicles, which delayed immediate access to the victim,” the release said. Officers found a 17-year-old male who had been shot in the head. He was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced deceased.
The victim’s identity will be released at a later time by the Peoria County coroner.
A preliminary investigation showed individuals attending an unrelated event at a park shelter observed two groups actively exchanging gunfire. A canvas of the area identified multiple locations within the park where shots were fired.
All three shootings remain under investigation.
