Taylor Farms has recalled products made with jalapeño peppers that can cause salmonella, including items sold at Illinois stores.
On Aug. 9, brand owner Taylor Fresh Foods voluntarily recalled dips, salsas, guacamole and other items sold under brand names that include Trader Joe’s, Freshness Guaranteed and others. Kroger, Target, Walmart and Whole Foods are among the outlets carrying the products, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The move comes as the FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in collaboration with state and local partners, are investigating illnesses in a multistate outbreak of salmonella infections linked to Mexican-grown fresh jalapeños supplied by Coast Citrus Distributors to distributors, restaurants, and food service companies, including Mexican-style restaurants in the U.S.
A total of 345 people infected with the outbreak strain of salmonella have been reported from 27 states. There have been 36 hospitalizations reported, with illnesses started on dates ranging from June 19, 2026, to July 20, 2026,as of Aug. 5. Of the 191 people interviewed, 177 reported eating at a Mexican-style restaurant before their illness, including Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA between June 2026 and July 2026.
At that time, Coast Citrus Distributors did not appear to supply jalapeños directly to grocery stores, according to the CDC said.
Taylor Farms issued the Aug. 9 jalapeño recall after Coast Citrus Distributors began voluntarily recalling fresh jalapeños due to potential salmonella contamination.
Taylor Farms said it is no longer sourcing products from the farmer linked and will be filling orders from other suppliers.
It’s the latest product recall from the company implicated in the nationwide Cyclospora outbreak.
Taylor Farms on July 17 voluntarily recalled iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico, identified as the potential source of the recent Cyclospora outbreaks.

As of Aug. 9, Taylor Farms said it was not aware of any reported illnesses linked to its products containing jalapeños.

Consumers who have any recalled product should discard it immediately and not consume it. Refunds are available at the location of purchase.

How harmful is salmonella?
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA recall notice. Healthy people infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
Symptoms of salmonella Infection
Illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating food that is contaminated with salmonella, and the symptoms usually last four to seven days. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Children younger than five, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have severe infections.
