Sweet Corn Festival, WWE among top events around Springfield in July

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The July Fourth holiday is in the rearview, but there are plenty of things still going on in the capital city for the rest of the month.

Here’s the rundown on what’s going on around Springfield this July.

The Prince of Egypt the Musical

What: Experience the epic story that inspired generations in The Prince of Egypt, a breathtaking musical based on the DreamWorks Animation film. With a score by Grammy and Oscar-winner Stephen Schwartz, who also worked on Wicked, this production at the Muni is directed by Wes Bridges. 

When:  8:30 p.m. July 10 to July 12.

Where: 815 East Lake Shore Drive, Springfield

More: Tickets are $12 to $30 before $3.25 in taxes and fees and can be purchased on metrotix.com. 

The Art of Jazz 

What: Jazz in the art gallery, listening to contemporary music through brass and pipes surrounded by socialized people with a taste for just as contemporary art. Immersing guests in a blend of music, culture and community, this event is perfect for fan of all three.

When: 7 to 9 p.m. July 14.

Where: The Pharmacy Art Gallery, 623 E. Adams St., Springfield

More: Admission is free but a $10 donation at the door is encouraged. 

Chatham Jaycees Sweet Corn Festival 

What: Another year of corn shucking and delightful food to try just a quick drive down to Chatham. This annual event is host to several fun games over the weekend including cow chip throws to Scottish-style highland games.

When: 5 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. July 17 and 8 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. July 18.

Where: 731 S. Main St., Chatham

More: This is a free and kid friendly event but bring cash.

Downtown Prom 

What: Want a night to remember? This new event hosted by Downtown Springfield Inc. is welcoming patrons to dress up, dine out and celebrate at a variety of participating downtown businesses. Participating downtown bars will host prom night events complete with music and decorations on July 17, and guests are encouraged to move about downtown, utilize photo spots and explore throughout the evening.

When: 5 to 10 p.m. July 17.

Where: Downtown Springfield, various spots

Lake Press Club Summerfest

What: Another year and another sun rise over the Lake Press Club off of Lake Springfield. Sunshine Daydream, a Grateful Dead Tribute band will play the annual festival where food, drink, live music and clubhouse games are to be played. 

When: 6 to 10 p.m. July 18.

Where: 13 Club Area, Springfield

More: Admission is free but bring cash for food and drink options.

Skate for a Cure

What: The fourth annual Zack Defreitas Skate for a Cure three versus three hockey tournament is skating up fast. This tournament brings together players of all ages from across the country ready to showcase their skills and raise money for a great cause while playing the sport they love.  The Zack Defreitas Project aims to raise $20,000 annually to educate young athletes about colorectal cancer and provide material support to underprivileged youth in the hockey community through the New Equipment partnership with Springfield Youth Hockey Association & The Springfield Park District.

When: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 25

Where: 2043 N. Fifth St., Springfield

More: This event has door prizes, a free photo booth, a silent auction and raffle as well as vendor concessions. Registering teams or to donate go to gonzoslegacy.net.  

WWE Summer Slam 

What: This live event will be the hottest of the summer down at the Bank of Springfield Center in the heart of downtown. The main roster available to change will have main WWE superstars Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther as the headline ticket match; Bron Breakker vs. the USOS team with a triple threat match featuring Carmelo Hayes later in the show.

When: 7:30 p.m. July 30.

Where: BoS Center, 1 Convention Center Plaza, Springfield

Powerlight Abe Lincoln Car Show and Cruise

What: While the 13th Annual Powerlight Abe Lincoln Car Show is set officially for Aug. 2, the Cruise for Fun in will take place on July 31 at the Cherry Hills Church. Join dozens of classic hotrods to show off the most beautiful car you own. Starring on the cruise is Candy Clark, who starred in American Graffiti and Larry Wilcox & Robert Pine stars of CHiPs.

When: 6 p.m. July 31

Where: 2125 Woodside Road, Springfield
