Rockford area YMCA unveils expanded fitness center on Feb. 12

The Northeast Family YMCA has unveiled a new fitness center expansion at its Loves Park location.

The $800,000 project, which took eight weeks to complete, doubles the size of the fitness center to 4,000 square feet. The expansion occupies the space formerly used by UW Health physical therapy, according to a community announcement.

Expanded amenities and equipment

The renovation included removing walls to connect the two spaces, adding new flooring and introducing additional equipment. One of the notable additions is the EGYM Smart Circuit, a training system that automatically adjusts to a user’s custom settings for weight, range of motion and cardiovascular exercise.

“The Y was the first fitness center in the region to introduce EGYM at the SwedishAmerican Riverfront Y,” according to the announcement. “It’s a comprehensive training option that takes the guesswork out of exercise.”

The expansion also features new plate-loaded strength equipment, including six half racks with platforms for heavy lifting, an additional leg press and chest press, and new pieces such as a hack squat, glute drive, leg press and seated calf machines.

Extended hours coming soon

While the Northeast Y will maintain its current hours of operation, it will soon allow members to access the fitness center overnight with an upgraded membership.

“We tested this model at the Puri Family YMCA and it is working great,” said Melissa Burns, vice president of operations. “We know our members are seeking a healthy lifestyle, but their schedule doesn’t always align with our hours. This new benefit will hopefully remove barriers for Y members and allow them to focus on their wellbeing when it works best for them.”

The Northeast Family YMCA opened in 2007, and this is its first major renovation.

“Our cardio and weight rooms are one of the highest used areas in the Y, and we noticed members were having to wait to use equipment,” said Becca Homb, executive director. “This investment allows us to better serve our members, while making space for potential new members.”

Capital campaign supports upgrades

The YMCA is in the midst of a $15 million to $20 million capital campaign to upgrade its facilities. So far, $11 million has been donated.

“This exciting fitness expansion is one of the many meaningful projects that have been completed,” said Brent Pentenburg, CEO of the YMCA of Rock River Valley. “The Y expanded the fitness center at the SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA in 2024, renovated and opened Good Shepherd YMCA in West Rockford in 2024, and upgraded equipment at the Puri Family YMCA in 2025.”

The YMCA will continue its fundraising efforts to support more projects. Anyone interested in contributing to the campaign can contact Michelle Gorham at mgorham@rockriverymca.org.

According to the announcement, the YMCA of Rock River Valley serves 30,000 people through six area branches and is one of the largest nonprofit employers in the greater Rockford area.
