The demolition of a longtime Peoria Heights grocery store is almost complete, making way for a new development.
The decades-old building, which housed a grocery store that village residents were sad to lose, began coming down this week to make room for a new mixed-use development on Prospect Road.
Developers William Torchia, Brandon Dean and Ciaron Graham bought the Save A Lot property in 2024 and later unveiled plans to construct a three-story, mixed-use building at the site. Clifton, Larson, Allen has already signed on as a tenant.
New public parking will be added to Prospect Road as part of an agreement between the village and the developers. Construction of the new building is expected to start this year.
The Save A Lot store, which closed in late March, opened in 2001. Prior to that, the location had been a Ben Schwartz IGA store that opened in 1934.
