The Peoria area set a record for rainfall on June 17 as severe storms hit the area and dumped over two inches of rain.
The National Weather Service in Lincoln said that 2.24 inches of rain were recorded in Peoria on Wednesday, a new record for the day that surpassed the old record of 1.87 inches, set in 1892. The large amount of rainfall stemmed from severe storms that caused thousands of people to be without power in the area and even raised concerns about flash flooding.
Even with the large amount of rainfall Wednesday, Peoria’s record for rain in a single day overall still remains the 5.52 inches that fell on May 18, 1927, according to NWS.
