Pedestrian dies in Galesburg train accident

One person was killed Thursday afternoon after an accident involving a train in Galesburg, according to Knox County authorities.

The Galesburg Police Police Department and emergency responders were called to a train accident involving a pedestrian about 2 p.m. Thursday at Pearl and Peck streets in Galesburg. A male was found and transported to OSF HealthCare Saint Mary Medical Center, where the person was pronounced dead, according to a Thursday night Facebook post from the Knox County Coroner’s Office.

The identity of the victim is being withheld until family notification, the coroner said. The coroner’s office asked for the public to “show some respect” and not share the person’s identity until family could be told of the death and “not have them hear about (it) on social media.”

Earlier in the day, Galesburg police issued an advisory that trains were halted at several intersections as police investigated an accident involving a train and a pedestrian. Motorists were told to find alternate routes.
