One person arrested after Memorial Day shooting at Peoria park

PEORIA — People gathered at Glen Oak Park on Memorial Day were fired upon by at least one suspect, according to the Peoria Police Department.

Monday evening around 6:10 p.m. police responded to the 2200 block of North Prospect Road on a report of shots fired. When police arrived at Glen Oak Park, they observed a crowd of people fleeing the area and vehicles attempting to leave the area.

No one was injured during the shooting, according to Peoria Police spokeswoman Semone Roth.

One vehicle attempting to leave the park crashed and two males fled the vehicle on foot, according to police. A handgun with an extended magazine was found inside the crashed vehicle by police.

Police arrested Harlem C. Porter, 20, in connection with the shooting. Porter faces a handful of charges including aggravated discharge of a firearm.

The Memorial Day shooting at Glen Oak Park comes just weeks after the Peoria Park District Board of Trustees held a special meeting to address violence occurring at Peoria parks. That meeting was held after two shootings happened on April 26 at two different Peoria parks, Bradley Park and Stadium Park. The Bradley Park shooting left a 17-year-old dead.
