One hospitalized after three-vehicle crash that caused fuel leak at Peoria intersection

A three-vehicle accident Friday morning at the intersection of Knoxville and Forrest Hills avenues led to a fuel leak and the closure of roads in the area for a period of time.

According to the Peoria Fire Department, they responded to the intersection at 10:31 a.m. in response to an accident in the area. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found a pair of passenger vehicles and a semi-truck involved in the crash, with the 100-gallon saddle tank on the semi-truck ruptured.

An estimated 75 gallons of diesel fuel was leaking out and spilling onto the pavement below. Hazmat technicians were required to stop the leak, using a specialized putty and other equipment to prevent further damage. Other fire crews assisted by spreading an absorbent onto the pavement.

All lanes on Knoxville and Forrest Hill in the vicinity of the crash were closed for over two hours.

One occupant of the vehicles was transported to a local hospital, with two others refusing treatment at the scene. The driver of the semi-truck was uninjured.

All vehicles were towed from the scene.
