A new report from the personal finance site GOBankingRates identified the wealthiest suburbs surrounding America’s 50 largest cities, including New York, Los Angeles, and, obviously, Chicago.
Using data from the U.S. Census 2023 American Community Survey, the site found the 50 largest metropolitan areas by population and identified the cities with the highest average household incomes within each Metropolitan Statistical Area.
But what is the Windy City’s wealthiest suburb? Is it Naperville? Or somewhere on the North Shore?
Here’s what the report found.
What is the wealthiest Chicago suburb?
The report found that the wealthiest suburb outside Chicago is Hinsdale, with a population of nearly 9.4 million and a mean 2023 household income of $376,366. Though this amount may seem staggering, the report found that the mean income was actually down more than 4% from the previous year.
Hinsdale was ranked the third wealthiest suburb in the report, with an average 2025 single family home value of nearly $1.3 million.
What’s the wealthiest suburb in the US?
Scarsdale, New York, was ranked as the wealthiest suburb in the nation by GOBankingRates, with a mean 2023 household income of $601,193 and an average 2025 single family home value of over $1.6 million.
