Man dead following fire in rural Woodford County

A man was found dead Wednesday morning after a fire engulfed a home just outside East Peoria.

Woodford County Coroner Tim Ruestman said the man was pronounced dead at 10:45 a.m., following a fire at a home in the 200 block of Surrey Lane, north of East Peoria and west of Germantown Hills.

Ruestman said that motorists reported the fire at 2:17 a.m. Wednesday, with emergency personnel finding the home completely engulfed when they arrived on scene. After the fire was extinguished, a man was found inside the home and pronounced dead.

An investigation is underway, with the Coroner’s Office assisting alongside the Woodford County Sheriff’s Office, Germantown Hills Fire Department and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal. An autopsy is also being conducted to identify the man, with a toxicology report also being conducted per state law.
