Knox County gets $120K to boost maternal and infant health care

The Knox County Health Department has been awarded a $120,000 grant to support maternal and infant health, according to a community announcement.

The funding, provided by the Illinois Department of Human Services, will be used for the Better Birth – Comprehensive program. The program aims to reduce maternal and infant morbidity, particularly among those with racial and ethnic disparities, according to the announcement.

“Knox County Health Department is pleased to receive this grant award and use it towards strengthening critical support and culturally responsive care to Knox County birthing to six months families to help them have healthy starts and the opportunity to achieve their full health potential,” Michele Gabriel, public health administrator at the Knox County Health Department, said in the announcement.

The program offers comprehensive, one-on-one nursing assessment to pregnant and postpartum individuals and their infants. It also connects families to medical, social and other benefits and supports available in the community.

The program emphasizes the importance of a medical home and assists clients in meeting their family’s health and wellness goals. Services are provided throughout pregnancy and the first six months after birth to residents who meet the eligibility criteria.
