Jaylon Johnson in attendance at Bears voluntary OTAs

The Chicago Bears have kicked off organized team activities (OTAs) this week, and there is one notable defensive superstar present for the voluntary workouts.

Bears coach Ben Johnson confirmed that former Pro Bowl cornerback Jaylon Johnson is present for their voluntary workouts at Halas Hall this week after missing the initial voluntary offseason activities.

“I appreciate him being here now getting to know his teammates,” Ben Johnson said, pointing out the voluntary nature of this portion of the offseason.

Johnson is coming off an injury-riddled season that limited his production and time on the field, and the defense clearly missed him. Johnson missed the entirety of last summer with a groin injury, and he landed on injured reserve in Week 2 with another groin injury that required surgery and held him out for 10 regular-season games. Johnson returned in Week 13, but it was clear that he was never 100 percent, which affected his play.

Now, Johnson is back healthy and participating during the voluntary portion of the offseason, which he’s sometimes skipped in the past. Johnson will be key to the defense’s success this season as they welcome some new faces to the mix, including veteran safety Coby Bryant, first-round rookie safety Dillon Thieneman and fourth-round rookie cornerback Malik Muhammad.
