Illinois businesses report major layoffs across various job sectors

In August, 10 businesses reported plans for layoffs expected to affect roughly 1,000 workers in Illinois.

The job reductions were reported to the state as part of the Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, also known as the WARN Act.

Businesses that reported layoffs included financial services companies, janitorial contractors, a senior living community and a nursing care facility. Following is a compilation of the layoffs based on WARN reports submitted to the state by 10 companies.

Capital One announces 215 layoffs at Illinois site

Citing a financial restructuring effort, Capital One Financial reported it would lay off 193 workers from its facility in Riverwoods on Oct. 17. The company also intends to lay off 22 more employees on May 1, 2026, according to the WARN notice.

“We conducted an extensive strategic business review of Discover’s home equity and refinance loan business to better understand its position and potential as part of Capital One’s business portfolio,” a Capital One spokesperson said. “In late June, we announced the difficult decision to exit this business.”

Illinois maintenance company loses contract

Diverse Facility Solutions filed a WARN report stating it would lay off 276 workers on Sept. 30. However, president Mark Wright said the company, located in Alsip, plans to lay off 191 employees rather than the 276 indicated in the WARN report.

“Chicago Public Schools is cancelling private janitorial services as of September 30,” he told the Journal Star.  “They are retaining most, but not all of the employees, and transferring them to a different union.”

Chicago company to lay off workers

United Maintenance Company, Inc. plans to lay off 91 workers on Sept. 30 due to losing a contract. The company, located in Chicago, did not return messages left by email and phone.

Illinois maintenance company announces more layoffs

Total Facility Maintenance submitted a supplemental WARN notice that it would lay off 141 employees Sept. 30 after reporting last year that it was laying off 41 workers. The company cited a lost contract as the reason for the layoffs.

The Journal Star reached out to Total Facility, headquartered in Wood Dale, by telephone and email but did not receive responses.

Illinois nursing care facility is closing

Woodstock Christian Life Services, doing business as Hearthstone Communities, announced it was closing for financial reasons and intended to lay off 117 workers Sept 30.

Hearthstone has been serving seniors in the community of Woodstock continuously for over a century, according to its website. Representatives from the company declined to comment further.

Food service contractor laying off 165 workers in Chicago

The Compass Group reported it would lay off an additional 82 workers at its TouchPoint Support Services facility at St. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital and 83 additional workers at the TouchPoint Support Services site at Resurrection Hospital, according to supplemental WARN reports.

The Compass Group, a food service contractor, had previously reported layoffs because of a lost contract. The Compass Group USA did not respond to telephone calls and emails.

California firm to lay off workers

Zeco Systems Inc., headquartered in Los Angeles, announced it would lay off four employees in October and two more workers in December. The WARN report cited changes in business needs as the reason for the layoffs.

The Journal Star reached out by phone and email to Zeco Systems and its parent company Shell but did not receive a response.

Business laying off more workers this fall

Block, Inc., a finance and insurance company, reported it plans to lay off five employees Oct. 13 due to a reduction in its work force, according to a supplemental WARN report.

Nordstrom’s to lay off additional Illinois workers

Nordstrom Credit, Inc. reported upcoming layoffs of three workers at remote Illinois locations Nov. 15 due to restructuring. The supplemental layoffs are in addition to the layoffs of employees in August.

Retail chain reports layoffs in Illinois

Citing financial reasons, the retail chain Claire’s Stores Inc. notified the state on Aug. 5 of layoffs of 46 workers, according to the WARN report.
