The Women’s Professional Baseball League opened to a sellout crowd of over 4,000 fans at Robin Roberts Stadium on Saturday, August 1.
The Los Angeles Queens and New York Heights started the opening game following a lengthy rain delay and a poignant ceremony for the inaugural season.
Former All-American Girls Professional Baseball League player Maybelle Blair, who is 99 years old, and former St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox manager Tony LaRussa tossed the ceremonial first pitch.

7:24 p.m. — End of 1. New York Heights 5, Los Angeles Queens 2. Both teams combine for eight hits in the first inning. Los Angeles catcher Maggie Foxx delivered the first runs of the season with a 2-RBI double to center field with two outs. New York rallied ahead on RBI hits from Kylee Lahners and Jaida Lee.
7:41 p.m. — End of 2. New York Heights 7, Los Angeles Queens 2. New York extends the lead on RBI hits from Denae Benites and Kylee Lahners. Lahners, the third baseman, has three RBIs already.
