CEO, founder of Peoria nonprofits announces retirement

PEORIA — Denise Moore is retiring as CEO of Black Business Alliance and the Minority Business Development Center, organizations she founded, according to a news release.

Moore, a former member of the Peoria City Council, founded the Minority Business Development Center in Bloomington 30 years ago. She will be replaced as CEO by Luisa Gomez, the former vice president of Community Banking Development.

“Luisa has demonstrated her passion for minority business and a commitment to seeing those businesses thrive,” Moore said of Gomez. “She is already involved in many of the same initiatives that the MBDC has championed; financial literacy, community empowerment and engaging returning citizens.”

Moore was the first African American woman elected to the Peoria City Council in 2013. She is retiring to spend more time with her grandchildren in Kansas City and her parents in Chicago, according to the release.

“We are very sad that Denise will no longer serve as CEO, but glad to know that she is still a consultant’s call away,” Minority Business Development Center Board President Rachel Parker said in the release.
