The Chicago Bears were back at training camp on Tuesday for their 12th practice of the summer, and there was plenty to break down from Day 12, including the performance of quarterback Caleb Williams.
Williams is entering his third season following a breakout sophomore campaign where he set a franchise single-season passing record, led an NFL record seven fourth quarter comebacks (including the postseason) while leading Chicago to an 11-6 record, NFC North title and playoff win. That was all in one season with head coach Ben Johnson. Now, all eyes are on Williams this summer as he continues to develop under Johnson and make a huge leap in Year 3.
We’re taking a look at the good, the bad and the noteworthy with Williams from the 12th practice of Bears training camp:
The Good
It wasn’t a perfect day for Williams, but it was a strong day nonetheless. According to Chris Emma, Williams was “sharp” and the offensive operation was overall “crisp” on Tuesday. Clay Harbor noted that Williams made some nice throws. “During backed-up work, he created space and found Rome Odunze then Scotty Miller.” Nicholas Moreano singled out one throw to Kalif Raymond on a screen pass that the veteran receiver took for a touchdown against the second-team defense. Overall, Williams has had an impressive two weeks of camp so far, where Chris Emma noted he’s “showcased his command in Ben Johnson’s offense.”
The Bad
For the most part, Williams and the offense had a solid showing. But it wasn’t perfect. Both the first- and second-team offenses struggled during situational drills at the end of practice, according to Courtney Cronin, where Williams got rid of the ball on fourth-and-3.
The Noteworthy
The Bears offense had a relatively successful practice, including acing a tough test near the end of practice, per Courtney Cronin, where they were backed up at their own 1-yard line. “The goal for the drill was to get two first downs, which Williams accomplished by creating space to find Rome Odunze for a 50-plus yard catch-and-run followed by a big gain to Scotty Miller.”
Through the first two weeks of training camp, Williams feels confident about where he’s at and knows he can still improve.
“I just I want to keep getting better for the guys,” Williams said. “I want to be faster with my process, to be able to help the O-line throughout you know long games and things like that, they’re sitting in their stances, be able to get the communication throughout, you know whether it’s on the ball or whether it’s in the huddle, just be smoother and faster and everything so that I can be better for the guys and ultimately that helps us win.”
