The Chicago Bears showed off their bag of tricks during Sunday’s 31-14 win over the Dallas Cowboys, where we finally caught a glimpse of what this Ben Johnson offense can be.
The top highlight came when quarterback Caleb Williams threw a 65-yard touchdown to rookie receiver Luther Burden III on a flea flicker trick play. It was the first touchdown of Burden’s career and energized Soldier Field in a way that had seemingly been missing for the last few seasons.
The play nearly started off as a disaster as running back D’Andre Swift was hit when receiving the handoff, and nearly sailed the pitch over Williams’ head. After he was able to secure the pitch, Williams flung it deep to a wide open Burden, showcasing his arm strength and talent in one fluid motion.
Following the game, Williams spoke about his ability to get the play off smoothly, putting trust and faith in Burden’s ability to be open.
“I think it’s God-given ability, I guess,” Williams said. “To be able to get it out that fast. I don’t know. Just a belief and confidence in Luther being down there. In those moments you’re kind of taught to kind of peek at the defense before you get the ball. I peeked a few times while the ball was coming to me. Like I said, just throw it out there as far as I can and let Luther go make the play.”
Williams and Burden did indeed make a play, a highlight reel of what could be in store in the future under Johnson, and a play that signified the individual talents of both the second-year quarterback and rookie receiver.
