The Chicago Bears appear to have a wide open competition for their starting left tackle job, with even more intrigue being added to it on Sunday.
Following their Week 1 preseason win over the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, the team was back at practice on Sunday and announced they have activated left tackle Ozzy Trapilo from the physically unable to perform list, just seven months after he suffered a ruptured patellar tendon.
In the win over the Browns, the Bears split the reps between Kiran Amegadjie and Jedrick Wills, where the former played 34 and the latter played 31 offensive snaps, but neither came out of the game with an upper-hand. Speaking to the media on Sunday, offensive coordinator Press Taylor said that the competition is still up for the taking.
“It wasn’t as clean as we’d love it to be going forward. And that’s kind of why there still continues to be an open competition for the position,” Taylor said, while also adding that he did see both players show positive traits, but there is clearly still a battle for the spot.
There’s no telling when Trapilo could insert himself into the conversation and compete for the left tackle spot, but after the first week of the preseason, the competition is still very much open.
Between Trapilo, Wills, Amegadjie, and veteran Braxton Jones, who returned to practice recently, the team is not short on options for the left tackle spot. And they’re clearly not in any rush to name the starter with two more preseason games remaining.
