What’s the history of the Register Star?

The Rockford Register Star has a deep and rich history in the city it calls home. That history began with Rockford’s first newspaper, the Register Republic, which was founded in 1855, followed by the Morning Star in 1888. The two newspapers merged in 1979 creating the Register Star. The Register Star has been part of the Gannett/USA Today Network since 1967. The company was operated as GateHouse Media from 2007 to 2019.
