4 tornadoes sweep northern Illinois on April 17. Here's what we know

The National Weather Service confirmed that northern Illinois experienced 4 tornadoes on April 17, including the EF2 that left heavy damage in Lena and an EF1 in Roscoe.

“At this time, there are no new updates to report regarding the tornado damage in Lena. Our crews and partner agencies are still actively working throughout the area, and we will continue to share information as it becomes available. We appreciate everyone’s patience, cooperation, and continued support as recovery efforts move forward. Please continue to avoid damaged areas and allow emergency personnel the space they need to work safely.”

From the Village of Lena:

“The Village of Lena would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone — near and far — who has stepped up to help our community in the wake of the recent tornado. From those helping with cleanup, to those donating supplies, providing meals, checking in, and offering support in countless ways—we are truly overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity being shown. The strength, compassion, and resilience of this community is incredible. In difficult times like these, it’s a reminder of just how strong Lena and the surrounding towns truly are.

From ComEd:

“As of 9:30 p.m. this evening, power has been restored to 99% of the more than 43,000 customers affected by the recent storm. Restoration efforts continue in some of the hardest-hit communities, including Lena and Rockford. Our crews will keep working as quickly and safely as possible until power is restored for all remaining customers.”

Lena tornado: EF2

The Lena tornado traveled 8.5 miles with winds as high as 130 mph. It started southwest of Lena and stopped just southwest of McConnell.

Harrison tornado: EF1

The Harrison tornado traveled for 3.7 miles with peak winds of 110 mph. It started near the intersection of Meridian Road and Favor Road and dissipated in open fields near Owen Center Road.

Roscoe tornado: EF1

The Roscoe tornado had peak winds of 95 mph and traveled 11.2 miles from the intersection of Freeport and Bates Road to the Winnebago-Boone county line.

Pecatonica tornado: EFU

The EFU tornado in Pectonica was spotted about 4:35 to 4:37 p.m. It was on the ground in an open field three miles north of Pecatonica for about two minutes.
