2025 IHSA baseball state finals recap: Illinois crowns Class 3A, 4A state champions

JOLIET — The Illinois High School Association Class 3A and Class 4A baseball state championships were Saturday at Duly Health & Care Field, home of the Joliet Slammers.

Two programs won their first state titles — Burbank St. Laurence in Class 3A and Libertyville in Class 4A. Here is a look at both championship games:

Class 4A: Libertyville 4, McHenry 1

JOLIET — Libertyville won its first state championship, shutting down McHenry in the Class 4A state championship game at Duly Health & Care Field.

Air Force commit Josh Holst pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on two hits. The left-hander ended the game on a swinging strikeout, his eight of the game. He was 1-for-2 at the plate with three RBIs, including a two-run single in the fifth to help put the game away.

Libertyville (35-4) won its first title on a third trip to state. It has second-place finishes in 1976 and 2013.

McHenry (35-5-1) was back at state for the second time, after a fourth-place finish in 2022. This is the program’s best finish.

Class 3A: Burbank St. Laurence 8, Lisle Benet 5

JOLIET — St. Laurence scored three times in the final two innings to pull away for its first baseball state championship.

St. Laurence (36-5) baseball won the suburban Chicago school its first state title since the 1990 wrestling team won in Class AA. Benet (26-13) earned its first state trophy in its second trip to state and first since 1989.

Daniel Coyle played the hero for St. Laurence, doubling in the sixth inning to drive in the go-ahead run. He finished 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. He also pitched the final three innings, allowing three hits and a run and striking out four.

Gino Zagorac took the loss for Benet, allowing six earned runs and 11 hits in six innings.

St. Laurence added two runs in the seventh, getting an RBI single from Enrique Villanueva and a sacrifice fly from Danny Donovan. Five players had two or more hits for St. Laurence.

Josh Gugora had two doubles and two RBIs for Benet.
