Zack Smith is now the incoming chairman of Pensacola State College’s District Board of Trustees.
Todd Leonard, who joined the college’s governing board this year, will serve as the vice chair. Leonard is the athletic director at West Florida High School and has a son enrolled at Pensacola State. Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed him to the board of trustees in January.
A senior legal fellow and manager of the Supreme Court and Appellate Advocacy Program at The Heritage Foundation, Smith was appointed to the PSC board in February 2025 and the UWF Board of Trustees in May 2025. He previously served for several years as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Northern District of Florida.
Smith, who has been on the board since February 2025, will replace outgoing chair Gordon “Flash” Sprague.
Sprague made the motion nominating Smith to the two-year chairman post and board member Richard Holzknecht seconded it. The motion was unanimously passed by trustees Sprague, Holzknecht, Leonard, Oscar Locklin, Audrey McDonald and Dr. Troy Tippett.
Along with serving on the PSC governing board, Smith, Sprague and Ed Fleming are also on the University of West Florida’s board of trustees.
