A Winter Haven woman was killed in a motorcycle crash along U.S. 17 on March 22.
Polk County deputies responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcyclist about 4:10 p.m. at U.S. 17 and Avenue O Southwest in Winter Haven on March 22.
A 2013 Mercedes was traveling south on U.S. 17 approaching Avenue O. At the same time, 47-year-old Shena Carty was traveling north on U.S. 17 on her 2006 Suzuki motorcycle. The unnamed driver of the Mercedes attempted to turn left onto Avenue O and entered the path of the motorcycle, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Carty, who was wearing a helmet, was ejected from her motorcycle. When first responders arrived, she was unresponsive with significant injuries. Carty was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The driver of the Mercedes was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The Sheriff’s Office investigation remains active and ongoing as of March 23.
It was the second fatal crash in Polk County involving a motorcycle during the weekend. A 37-year-old man died March 21 while trying to pass a line of cars on Polk City Road in Haines City.
