Where FSU basketball ranks in KenPom rankings after Jacksonville win

Florida State’s 87-63 win over Jacksonville may not dramatically move the needle nationally, but it did provide a measurable impact across KenPom’s advanced analytics as the Seminoles continue searching for consistency ahead of ACC play. FSU saw modest but meaningful movement in several efficiency categories, highlighting both areas of improvement and lingering concerns within Luke Loucks’ rotation.

The Seminoles climbed two spots in the overall KenPom rankings, while their net rating, offensive efficiency, and strength of schedule metrics all shifted following the Dolphins matchup. While the opponent quality limited the ceiling of any statistical jump, the data still paints a clearer picture of where Florida State stands entering the heart of its schedule. As conference play approaches, these small gains offer context for what must translate from analytics to results on the court.

Overall: No. 110

According to updated data from KenPom, Florida State moved up two spots nationally, jumping from No. 112 to No. 110 overall. While that climb may seem modest on the surface, several underlying efficiency metrics shifted in notable ways following the win.

Most importantly, FSU’s net rating improved from +5.54 to +6.13, signaling incremental progress in overall efficiency.

Offensive efficiency: No. 116

Their net rating gain was driven largely by offensive improvement, as the Seminoles’ adjusted offensive efficiency increased from 110.9 to 111.6, moving them from 126th to 116th nationally. For a team that has struggled at times to score consistently, that upward movement is encouraging — even if the opponent quality tempers expectations.

Adjusted defensive efficiency: No. 112

Defensively, Florida State remained relatively steady. The Seminoles’ adjusted defensive efficiency shifted slightly from 105.3 to 105.5, improving one spot nationally from 113th to 112th. While marginal, the stability suggests FSU avoided the kind of defensive regression that sometimes accompanies lower-tier non-conference games.

One of the more interesting changes came in tempo. Florida State’s adjusted tempo ranking slipped from sixth to seventh nationally, with its tempo value moving from 75.2 to 74.8. That dip is likely opponent-driven, as Jacksonville ranks 335th in adjusted tempo, naturally slowing the overall pace of play and slightly impacting FSU’s profile.

Strength of schedule: No. 237th

FSU’s strength of schedule metrics also saw a minor improvement. Florida State’s overall strength of schedule net rating increased from -0.068 (309th nationally) to -0.055 (289th), while its non-conference strength of schedule fell from +0.12 to -2.00, dropping the Seminoles from 174th to 237th nationally. That decline reflects the cumulative impact of several lower-rated non-conference opponents rather than a single result.

Perhaps the most dramatic shift came in KenPom’s luck rating, where Florida State dropped from +0.12 (173rd) to -2.00 (289th). While “luck” can be volatile game-to-game, the swing underscores how thin the margin has been for FSU throughout the non-conference slate.

In total, Florida State’s KenPom movement after the Jacksonville win reinforces what the eye test already suggested: incremental improvement, especially offensively, but plenty of unanswered questions as ACC competition looms. The Seminoles’ metrics suggest a team still searching for consistency — and conference play will quickly reveal whether these small gains translate into meaningful results.
