How does the Jacksonville Jaguars’ backup quarterback situation compare to the rest of the NFL?
Gilberto Manzano of Sports Illustrated recently ranked all 32 backup quarterbacks, and the Jaguars’ Nick Mullens came in at No. 25 on the list.
“Mullens isn’t afraid to push the ball downfield, but his aggressive play style also occasionally comes with turnovers,” wrote Manzano. “But there are times when Mullens plays clean football, including his starting debut in 2018 when he threw three touchdowns and no interceptions for the 49ers in a Thursday Night Football game against the Raiders. Mullens, who’s in his second season with the Jaguars, is a quality spot starter, but it’s not ideal to ask him to play in consecutive games.”
The Jaguars signed Mullens last offseason to be Trevor Lawrence’s backup. Mullens spent the 2022 through 2024 seasons in Minnesota, operating in a similar system under Kevin O’Connell to that of Liam Coen.
Mullens has appeared in 38 games and made 20 starts over eight NFL seasons. He’s completed 66% of his passes at 8.0 yards per attempt with 34 touchdowns to 31 interceptions.
Beyond needing to be ready to step in if an injury occurs, the backup quarterback is also an extra set of eyes for the starter on the sidelines during games, on the practice field, and in the meeting rooms. That is where Mullens’ overall NFL experience, and specifically his experience in a Coen-like offense, has been valuable for Trevor Lawrence.
