What's that under construction outside Walmart on State Road 60 in Indian River County?

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Walmart Supercenter on State Road 60, is getting a makeover.

Both the interior and exterior of the popular store are getting a $500,000 total remodel, according to county Assistant Planning and Development Services Director Ryan Sweeney.

“They are trying to refresh the inside and outside look of the store,” said Sweeney. “It’s not an uncommon practice.”

The store will follow the company’s new “store of the future” plan, which was announced in January 2024. The Fort Pierce store will be getting the same treatment.

The other Walmart in Indian River County, in Sebastian, does not appear on the list to be renovated.

“Our new and remodeled stores will reflect Walmart’s Store of the Future concept, featuring improved layouts, expanded product selections and innovative technology to help our associates better support our customers and make shopping more convenient and enjoyable,” said Walmart President and CEO John Furner, in news a release.

Walmart is investing in sustainability, wrote Furner, through energy-efficient equipment and lighting, lower-impact refrigerants and more. The Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer, also plans to develop a coast-to-coast network of affordable electric vehicle fast-charging stations.

Key new features include, big, bold signage and new digital displays; more product selections and new layouts to provide more room; wide-aisled pharmacies; a new private screening room and privacy checkout areas; and higher capacity for online pickups and deliveries.

It’s unknown when the remodel will be completed, but Walmart officials said each remodel will take a few months. Stores will not close during construction, and the Supercenter is one of 650 stores nationwide slated to be overhauled.

Walmart representatives could not be reached for comment.

“Residents should be wary of work, and exercise caution,” said Sweeney. “But they should expect a nice, new and revamped shopping experience.”
