What will playing time on offense and defense look like for Jaguars' Travis Hunter?

One of the big and most intriguing questions around this Jacksonville Jaguars team in 2025 centers around Travis Hunter and what his playing time between offense and defense will look like this season.

While I’m sure, as part of the Jaguars’ plan for Hunter, they have an idea of where they want his snap count totals to end up, this is also going to be a very fluid situation as well. One where, as GM James Gladstone described recently, Hunter’s snap counts on offense and defense are likely to vary week-to-week depending on what the matchup and game flow dictates.

“Time will truly tell, and I think the thing you can, in fact, read into at this stage is that he does not tire,” said Gladstone on Sirius XM NFL radio. “He has got a spark, he has got the energy, the capacity from a physical standpoint to be able to do it is certainly there. It’ll be in terms of one game to the next, where does it sit, where does it make the most sense, certain game plans might dictate usage differently.

“So time will truly tell, and I don’t know that one game to the next is going to be the exact same. Putting a number on it at this stage is, I think probably premature, but look forward to seeing how it plays out here.”

Liam Coen recently echoed Gladstone’s sentiments in saying that Hunter’s physical conditioning allows him to just keep going and going out on the football field.

Throughout the offseason programs, Hunter has seen more practice time at wide receiver. As Gladstone pointed out in this interview, that has led to there being a misconception that wideout will be Hunter’s primary position.

However, the real reason he has spent more time there is because the Jaguars view cornerback as Hunter’s natural position, so they wanted to get him more work at wide receiver and the nuances that come with that in the early going.

Outside of the final drill of the final minicamp practice, Hunter has spent his practices on either the offensive or defensive side of the football, depending on what that day called for. But the next step in his progression, and we will see a lot more of this in training camp, will be practicing on both sides of the ball on the same day, which is something that will have to take place in-season.
