FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup got off and running with Lionel Messi in Miami. Today marks the first full day of the 32-team tournament with four matches, highlighted by the reigning European champions.
Paris Saint-Germain plays the headliner today a little over two weeks after winning the UEFA Champions League final. Led by Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue, PSG will face a challenge in Atletico Madrid, which made the Round of 16 in the Champions League and routinely challenge Barcelona and city rival Real Madrid for La Liga titles.
They aren’t the only high-profile teams playing today. German superpower Bayern Munich, fielding the likes of Harry Kane and Thomas Mueller, will take the pitch, as will one of three MLS teams in the tournament, Seattle Sounders. Four continents will be represented across today’s games with New Zealand’s Auckland City, Brazil’s SE Palmeiras and Botafogo.
