Volusia County hit a new record for most turtle nests in a season on the morning of July 22, with about 100 days left until the end of the season.
A turtle laid the record-breaking nest in the Daytona Beach Shores area, according to county spokesman Clayton Jackson.
Sea turtle nesting season runs from May 1 to Oct. 31. As of about 10 a.m. on July 22, the county had tracked 1,518 nests this season on its Sea Turtle Nest Dashboard.
The previous record was set in 2023, when the county tracked 1,516 nests, according to Jackson.
Loggerheads have laid the most nests, but other types of turtles visiting Volusia County’s beaches include green turtles, leatherback turtles and Kemp’s Ridley turtles.
