VIN'S PEOPLE: Family swept up by Taylor Swift frenzy during NYC vacation

A cool thing happened to Matt and Brittany Kitchie during their recent vacation in the Northeast with their 8-month old son, Crew.

After visiting Philadelphia, where Brittany’s from, they went on to New York City for a couple of days, staying at a hotel in Manhattan.

Take a wild guess where the hotel was located? And when their reservations were?

“Right opposite Madison Square Garden – the same time Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were getting married,” said Kitchie, the Southeast High athletic director.

Adding to their Big Apple experience, Team Kitchie got an up close-and-personal taste of the media frenzy with TV crews staked out front for any and all celebrity sightings every time the family left the hotel.

“Never seen so many cameras in my life,” he joked. “It was crazy.”

Though they didn’t see any celebrities, his wife got a kick out of all the hoopla going on around them and why.

“She’s a big Taylor Swift fan.”

This was 1998 and, as had been a family tradition, Team Mannix was gathered at a funky old beach house down the Jersey Shore in Surf City.

So I’m watching the tournament with my nephew, Patrick Haddon.

Only we’re watching on Telemundo.

Patrick pipes up, “Uncle Vinny? How come we’re watching the game in Spanish?”

While not bilingual, I explained I enjoy Argentine TV icon Andres Cantor’s uptempo narration and his distinctive, booming: “GOOOOAAAAALLLLL!!!”

Fast forward 28 years.

Patrick, a former Oregon high school soccer star and now a Lake Tahoe resort bartender, has been watching the World Cup on … Telemundo.
