Vero Beach High's Taylor-Nicole Overton to run at U20 World Championships

More than a month after adding another medal to her state championship collection, Taylor-Nicole Overton is now making noise on the national stage.

The Vero Beach High School track and field standout will represent Team USA in multiple events at the World Athletics U20 Championships later this summer. She secured her spot by finishing third in the 400-meter final at the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships on June 19 at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon.

“This is something I’ve always dreamed of, watching the World Juniors and seeing everyone wearing Team USA colors or colors representing their country,” Overton said.

The World Athletics U20 Championships are scheduled for Aug. 5–9, also at Hayward Field.

Overton’s Team USA selection comes less than two weeks after she announced her commitment to run collegiately at the University of Tennessee. Originally part of the Class of 2027, she graduated early from Vero Beach after completing summer coursework and will enroll in Knoxville this fall.

“I’m super excited to go to Tennessee,” Overton said. “I know this is the place God wants me to be, and I’m ready for it.”

At the U20 championships, athletes were free to choose their event, and the two-time Class 4A state champion in the 400 stuck with her specialty. Overton shaved nearly eight-tenths of a second off her preliminary time, clocking 51.66 seconds in the final. She finished behind winner Ataja Stephane-Vazquez (51.08) and just behind runner-up Clara Adams (51.61).

“I definitely wanted to be in the top two so I could run individually, but my overall goal was to make the team,” Overton said. “Even though I got third, I’m still representing the team and able to help out. I’m really excited about it, and I think doing the relays will be a lot of fun, working with teammates I’ve run against over the years.”

Because she graduated early, Overton was eligible to compete in University of Tennessee colors during the U20 event.

An eight-time state medalist, Overton drew interest from several major programs. In addition to Tennessee, she took official visits to Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Texas.

“God blessed me with lots of options. It made the choice a little bit harder,” she said.

Overton, who was born in Texas before moving to Florida in seventh grade, ultimately chose to further her career in a state where she also has family ties. Her father, Aaron Overton Sr. — now Vero Beach’s track and field head coach — previously played professional football as a wide receiver for the Tennessee Titans.
