Vero Beach Fighting Indians getting a raucous sendoff for the big game

VERO BEACH — The cheering, lights, bells and whistles for the Vero Beach High School Fighting Indians contingent — football players, coaches, band and cheerleaders — will be in high gear even before they leave Saturday for Miami and the state football championship game.

It’s the Vero Beach High School football team’s first appearance in the Florida High School Athletic Association state championship game since 1981. The game will be played Dec. 13 at Florida International University’s South Dade Kia Field at Pitbull Stadium in Miami.

A police and fire escort will lead the team caravan from Vero Beach High School at noon Saturday, said district spokesperson Kyra Schafte in an email. Two Indian River County fire trucks and three Indian River County sheriff’s cruisers will lead the way, she said.

The community is invited to cheer on the students as the caravan makes its way from the school to Interstate 95, Schafte said. An exact route and designated intersections haven’t yet been determined.

The caravan returns home after the game, arriving at about 1 a.m. Dec. 14, she said. A planned escort is scheduled to welcome back the team, Schafte said. A return route will be announced as it is confirmed, she said.
