The internet’s favorite grocery store accessory is back. Trader Joe’s has officially released its highly anticipated summer collection of striped mini canvas tote bags, and just like previous viral drops from the grocery chain, they are flying off shelves.
The limited-edition mini totes, which hit storefronts on June 17, retail for a budget-friendly $2.99. Measuring 13 inches long, 11 inches tall, and 6 inches wide, the heavy-duty cotton-and-polyester-blend bags feature a practical pocket on each side. While past releases focused on solid primary colors, this year’s summer lineup introduces a trendy pastel aesthetic. The bags feature crisp vertical stripes in four muted, seasonal shades: pale pink, sky blue, seafoam green, and desert sand.
Where to find a Trader Joe’s tote bag in Palm Beach County
For local shoppers looking to bypass the online secondary resale market, there is still hope.
The newly opened Trader Joe’s in West Palm Beach, located at the intersection of South Dixie Highway and Gregory Road, reportedly still has striped bags in stock. Other locations in Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington, Boca Raton and Delray Beach may also still have stock for lucky shoppers. Please check directly with each store for availability.
However, local buyers should expect restrictions at the register. To combat mass reselling and ensure more neighbors get a chance to buy, individual store managers have been implementing strict purchase limits per customer.
Mini tote media frenzy
On launch morning, lines of eager customers wrapped around Trader Joe’s locations nationwide before employees even unlocked the doors. Social media platforms were immediately flooded with videos of shoppers practically sprinting through the aisles to secure the goods.
In one viral TikTok video, content creator Rob Pepp (@rantwithrobert) arrived at his local storefront at the crack of dawn, capturing a massive crowd of fellow bag hunters waiting on the sidewalk before making a mad dash for the display racks inside.
The madness has forced some storefronts to change how they do business. Viral videos show store managers passing out physical tickets to hundreds of people waiting in lines just so customers could prove they waited once they reached the register.
Commenters on the viral videos have chimed in across social platforms, with many calling the early-morning frenzy “peak consumerism.” Others confessed to visiting multiple area locations in a single day just to track down a single coveted color before shelves were cleared out in seconds.
Trader Joe’s told USA TODAY they recently filed a lawsuit to protect its customers from knockoff tote bags.
“We are aware that some knockoff totes are being sold online and have recently filed a lawsuit to protect our customers from being misled,” the company said in an emailed statement to USA TODAY. The grocer said it only offers Trader Joe’s products for sale inside its stores.
The legal battle isn’t targeting everyday shoppers who legally resell genuine bags on eBay for a profit. Instead, the federal lawsuit alleges that companies are manufacturing and distributing direct counterfeit knockoffs that clone Trader Joe’s distinct branding to mislead online customers.
