A Volusia County school employee was arrested June 21 for waving a gun at a boy her daughter spent the night out with, Volusia sheriff’s deputies said.
Rosa Maria Lamourt Tiru, 45, listed in a sheriff’s report as a “professional” at River Springs Middle School in Orange City, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, and aggravated child abuse. She was being held without bail in the Volusia County Branch Jail on June 24.
Lamourt Tiru’s husband, Lance Mulonas, 61, was also arrested in the incident. Deputies said he hit the victim’s vehicle with a metal pipe and held a curved knife near the boy’s neck.
Mulonas was charged with criminal mischief of $1,000 or more, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, false imprisonment, and aggravated child abuse. He was also being held without bail in the Volusia County Branch Jail.
Volusia schools: Suspect won’t return to classroom until officials conduct investigation
School district spokesman Mike Micallef said Lamourt Tiru will not return to the classroom or have contact with students while school officials conduct an investigation.
Micallef would not say whether Lamourt Tiru was a teacher or a paraprofessional and only said she was an employee.
“As a precautionary measure, Ms. Lamourt has been removed from any role involving student contact while the matter is reviewed,” Micallef wrote in an email to The News-Journal. “Law enforcement is handling the criminal matter, and our Professional Standards team is conducting a parallel employment investigation.”
Volusia mom waved gun at victim while husband held knife at boy’s neck, deputies say
According to a Volusia Sheriff’s Office arrest report obtained June 22, deputies were called to a Normandy Boulevard home in Deltona at 2:57 p.m. June 21 by Lamourt Tiru.
Lamourt Tiru reported that she believed her daughter, who did not spend the night at home, was dropped off by a man and that they were arguing with him.
Lamourt Tiru and Mulonas told deputies their daughter was gone all night but did not mention anything about a physical confrontation, the report said.
Deputies were called a second time to the Normandy Boulevard home at 3:54 p.m. after the mother of the boy reported that her son had been assaulted, the arrest report noted.
Deputies then met with the boy and his mother at a Saxon Boulevard location, according to the report.
The boy told deputies that he had picked up the girl the day before and they went to a party in Ocoee. He then returned to his Orange City home where he and Lamourt Tiru’s daughter hung out until he dropped her off at home on the afternoon of June 21, the report shows.
The boy said when the girl went inside her home, a white van driven by Mulonas, boxed him in so he could not leave. Mulonas then approached the juvenile victim’s vehicle and started hitting the roof of his car with a metal pipe, and held a curved, black knife near his neck, the boy said, according to the arrest report.
While Mulonas was yelling at the boy, Lamourt Tiru stood in front of his car yelling and waving a small black handgun, the report said.
Mulonas then moved his van and the boy left, deputies said.
When deputies spoke to Lamourt Tiru and Mulonas, they denied anything physical occurred. Lamourt Tiru admitted she had the gun and showed it to deputies, the arrest report said.
The damage to the victim’s car was estimated at $4,000, deputies wrote in the report.
